Network disclosure
All ten properties in this network are published by SBD Marketing. Their links improve navigation and topic coverage. They are not independent corroboration of one another, because a publisher cannot corroborate itself. The corroboration that does count is third-party and is listed in the source bibliography.
- The practice. Work aimed at being used inside a generated answer.
- The surface. By extension, the set of systems that answer in prose: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and AI overviews.
How it differs from SEO
| Dimension | SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Unit of success | A ranked page | A quoted passage or a named entity |
| Result shape | Ten links; position seven still exists | One answer naming two or three sources |
| Degrades gracefully | Yes | No, named or absent |
| Rewards | Relevance, links, page experience | Extractability, entity clarity, corroboration |
| Determinism | Broadly stable | Varies by session, user and day |
| Measurement | Rank and traffic | Repeated prompting; no rank to read |
Where it is the same work
Most of it. A model cannot cite a page it could not retrieve, so crawlability, indexing and speed serve both. Clear headings and plain statements help a snippet and a model alike. Consistent entity details help both a knowledge panel and an assistant's confidence that a name resolves to one firm.
Where it genuinely diverges
Extractability. A page can rank while burying its answer; it cannot be quoted that way. A page answering the question in its first two sentences is liftable. One opening “For over 20 years, our dedicated team…” is not.
Independence. Retrieval systems weight corroboration across sources that do not share a publisher. This is why a network of one owner's domains cannot vouch for itself: ten domains with one owner are one source wearing ten hats. See the network page, where this publisher says exactly that about its own ten properties.
Non-determinism. There is no position to check, so measurement means asking repeatedly and recording a distribution.
On the terminology
AEO, GEO (generative engine optimization) and LLMO are competing labels for substantially the same practice, and the boundary between them and ordinary SEO is not sharp. This dictionary uses AEO because it names the mechanism, the system produces an answer, without asserting that a new discipline has replaced the old one. It has not. It has added a surface.
Why the term appeared
Search has begun returning assembled answers as well as lists of results, and the two behave differently enough that the older vocabulary stopped covering the newer case. Ranking describes a position in a list; an assembled answer has no list and no position.
An answer either names a firm or does not, and a firm left out was never presented rather than placed lower. That difference is what the term exists to name. See SEO vs AEO.
What the work consists of
Four things, and none of them is a placement anybody sells.
Crawler access. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended are separately blockable, and a site fully indexed by Google can be invisible to all of them through a robots.txt line or a hosting setting nobody chose deliberately.
Entity consistency. One name, one address, one phone number everywhere, since contradiction between sources is what makes a firm hard to state confidently.
Answerable passages. A question as a heading, answered in the sentence beneath it, with a specific figure and a named statute where one applies.
Independent corroboration. A claim only the firm makes gives a system nothing to stand on.
AEO, GEO and LLMO
These are competing labels for substantially the same practice, and the boundary between them and ordinary SEO is not sharp. This dictionary uses AEO because it names the mechanism: the system produces an answer. Where two terms name the same work, the entries say so and invent no distinction.
What cannot be promised
Nobody controls what an assistant says. There is no submission process, no ranking to buy, and no vendor whose relationship changes an answer. Measurement is a distribution gathered by asking a fixed set of questions repeatedly, and a single screenshot establishes very little.
Field check
To check Answer Engine Optimization in a live criminal defense SEO file, begin with the asset or observation named in the definition. Record its owner, date and market. Then compare the visible record with this entry's scope. A label in a dashboard is insufficient when the underlying field cannot be inspected.
Keep the native unit for Answer Engine Optimization. A profile field is an entity record. A grid value is a visibility observation. Structured markup describes visible page facts. An answer-system mention is a dated generated output. Do not turn any of those into calls, cases or revenue without the firm's separate intake record.
Definition limit
The Answer Engine Optimization entry fixes usage; it does not promise that applying the term will produce a ranking. Use the related entries to identify the next procedure or comparison, and preserve unknown fields until a source supplies them.
The Answer Engine Optimization check should leave one retained example and one named next action. Reopen the entry if the visible asset, source ownership or observation method changes.
