Map Pack

noun · also local pack, 3-pack, local 3-pack

The block of three local business results, shown with a map, that appears above the organic listings for queries with local intent.

Network disclosure

All ten properties in this network are published by SBD Marketing. Their links improve navigation and topic coverage. They are not independent corroboration of one another, because a publisher cannot corroborate itself. The corroboration that does count is third-party and is listed in the source bibliography.

  1. The result block. Three local business listings with a map, drawn from Google Business Profiles instead of from websites.
  2. By extension, the competitive space those three positions represent: “getting into the map pack”.

Why it dominates defense search

Three properties compound. Defense queries almost always carry local intent, so the pack is triggered. The searcher is usually on a phone, where three results plus a map fill the first screen. And the intent is urgent, so the searcher wants someone to call, and every pack entry carries a call button.

The consequence is blunt. A firm ranking fourth organically but absent from the pack may be functionally invisible to a caller who never scrolls. A firm in the pack often receives a call from someone who never visits its website at all, which means the pack is a conversion surface as much as a ranking one.

What feeds it

Table. Inputs to pack placement and the degree of control a firm has over each.

Six of seven are decisions. That is the case for doing the work carefully: proximity sets a ceiling at any given point, but the shape of the surface is controllable.

Measuring pack visibility

Because proximity is an input, pack position differs at every point in a city. Checking once from the firm's own address produces the most flattering available number and the least informative one. Scanning a grid across the service area and reporting the whole surface is the only version that survives scrutiny.

Usage note

“Map pack domination” appears in a great many agency proposals. Ask what it means operationally: at how many points across the city, for which queries, measured how, compared against what baseline. A claim that cannot answer those four questions is not a claim about the map pack.

The filter

Google suppresses listings it reads as belonging to one entity, so two profiles sharing a name, an address or a phone number will often show only one. Firms with several attorneys who each registered a profile, or with an old profile under a prior name, meet this and read it as a ranking problem.

The diagnostic is direct: a profile absent from the pack but findable by an exact-name search is usually being filtered and not outranked.

Appearing is half of it

Once a listing appears it competes with two neighbours on what is visible at a glance: the review count and average, whether the photograph shows a real office, the category line, and whether the listing shows as open. A firm ranked second with ninety reviews routinely takes more calls than the firm ranked first with eleven.

Defense practices accumulate reviews slowly, because clients are reluctant to be publicly attached to a charge. A firm asking consistently at case conclusion builds a position over a year that a competitor cannot buy quickly.

Field check

To check Map Pack in a live criminal defense SEO file, begin with the asset or observation named in the definition. Record its owner, date and market. Then compare the visible record with this entry's scope. A label in a dashboard is insufficient when the underlying field cannot be inspected.

Keep the native unit for Map Pack. A profile field is an entity record. A grid value is a visibility observation. Structured markup describes visible page facts. An answer-system mention is a dated generated output. Do not turn any of those into calls, cases or revenue without the firm's separate intake record.

Definition limit

The Map Pack entry fixes usage; it does not promise that applying the term will produce a ranking. Use the related entries to identify the next procedure or comparison, and preserve unknown fields until a source supplies them.
