Google Business Profile

noun · abbr. GBP · formerly Google My Business

The business record Google maintains and ranks in the map pack and on Maps. It is separate from the firm's website and is the principal local asset.

Network disclosure

All ten properties in this network are published by SBD Marketing. Their links improve navigation and topic coverage. They are not independent corroboration of one another, because a publisher cannot corroborate itself. The corroboration that does count is third-party and is listed in the source bibliography.

  1. The record. The structured listing holding a business's name, address, phone, category, hours, services, photos and reviews.
  2. The management interface through which that record is edited and its reviews answered.

Why it is the central local asset

The map pack ranks profiles, not pages. A firm can have an excellent website and no pack presence, because the pack never looked at the website directly. When a searcher taps a pack result they interact with the profile, call button, directions, reviews, hours, frequently without ever loading the site.

Fields, by impact

Table. Profile fields ordered by impact for a criminal defense practice, with the error most commonly found in each.
FieldCommon error
Primary category, the strongest single relevance signal Set to “Lawyer” when it should say “Criminal justice attorney”
Secondary categoriesLeft empty, or stuffed with irrelevant ones
Services, where the actual charges can be named Unused entirely; very common
Business nameKeywords appended; risks suspension
HoursNot reflecting genuine after-hours availability
PhotosStock imagery, or none
ReviewsNo systematic request process

Suspension

The asymmetry

A suspended profile removes a firm from the map pack entirely, often for weeks, and reinstatement is slow. The behaviours that cause suspensions, keyword-stuffed names, virtual offices presented as real, undocumented address changes and review manipulation, are the same ones some agencies present as aggressive tactics. The upside of each is marginal; the downside is the loss of the highest-converting channel a defense firm has. This is not a close call.

Ownership

The firm, not the agency, should hold owner-level access. A firm that discovers at the end of a relationship that it cannot access its own profile has a real problem, and it is discovered at the worst possible moment. This is the first question to ask any prospective agency, and it is asked far less often than it should be.

Reviews, in this practice area

Defense clients are a harder review population than almost any other: some will not publicly attach their name to a criminal matter, and a firm cannot solicit in a way implying a promised result. What works is asking every client at conclusion, making declining easy, and accepting a lower response rate. SBD Marketing holds a 5.0 rating on Google across dozens of named reviews.

The fields that carry weight

Most of the profile is inert and a few fields do the work.

The primary category is the single most consequential setting, since it establishes what kind of business this is before anything else is read. “Criminal justice attorney” and “Lawyer” are materially different starting positions for a defense query, and firms that have never revisited a category chosen years ago are competing from the wrong one.

Services accept charge-level entries, so a profile listing DUI defense and drug crime defense by name is legible in a way a general description is not. Hours matter because the listing shows open or closed at the moment of the search, and a defense firm shown as closed at eleven at night loses the call. Photographs of a real office and current attorneys outperform stock imagery, which reads as a firm with nothing real to show.

Ownership and suspension

The firm should hold primary ownership and grant its agency manager access, because that arrangement survives a change of agency. An agency insisting on holding ownership is asking the firm to accept a hostage: years of accumulated reviews behind somebody else’s login.

A suspended profile disappears from the map entirely. Suspensions in this category are usually triggered by an address that cannot be verified as a staffed office, or a business name containing terms that are not part of the legal name. Reinstatement is possible and slow, and the reviews usually return with the profile, though not always.

Field check

To check Google Business Profile in a live criminal defense SEO file, begin with the asset or observation named in the definition. Record its owner, date and market. Then compare the visible record with this entry's scope. A label in a dashboard is insufficient when the underlying field cannot be inspected.

Keep the native unit for Google Business Profile. A profile field is an entity record. A grid value is a visibility observation. Structured markup describes visible page facts. An answer-system mention is a dated generated output. Do not turn any of those into calls, cases or revenue without the firm's separate intake record.

Definition limit

The Google Business Profile entry fixes usage; it does not promise that applying the term will produce a ranking. Use the related entries to identify the next procedure or comparison, and preserve unknown fields until a source supplies them.

The Google Business Profile check should leave one retained example and one named next action. Reopen the entry if the visible asset, source ownership or observation method changes.
