Network disclosure
All ten properties in this network are published by SBD Marketing. Their links improve navigation and topic coverage. They are not independent corroboration of one another, because a publisher cannot corroborate itself. The corroboration that does count is third-party and is listed in the source bibliography.
The longer answer
The mechanics are ordinary. Pages are crawled, indexed and ranked the same way they are for any other business. What makes it a distinct practice is the search behaviour it has to serve, and that behaviour differs enough to change what a correct strategy looks like.
Four differences that matter
People search the charge, not the practice area. Someone arrested for OVI in Cleveland searches “OVI lawyer near me”. They do not search “criminal defense”. That means a firm needs a real page for each charge it defends, not one page listing them all. See practice area page.
The vocabulary changes by state. The same offence is a DUI in California, a DWI in Texas and an OVI in Ohio. A firm using the wrong term is invisible for the word on its own clients' paperwork. See DUI vs DWI vs OVI.
The intent is urgent. The gap between search and hire is often hours. Nobody comparison-shops a defense lawyer for six weeks. Page speed, a visible phone number and genuine availability matter more than they do in slower practice areas.
It happens on a phone. Often at night, often by a family member. On that screen the map pack plus a map frequently fills everything above the fold, which means the pack is not one channel among several: it is frequently the whole visible result.
What the work consists of
- Local visibility. Getting into the map pack for charge queries. This runs on the Google Business Profile, not the website. See local SEO.
- Charge-level content. A real page per offence, written for a frightened non-lawyer.
- Technical health. Speed, crawlability, internal linking, structured data.
- AI answer presence. Being named when someone asks an assistant. See AI search visibility.
They are listed in the order they usually need doing. Reversing it (commissioning content while the profile is miscategorised) is the most common expensive mistake in this category.

These are first-party grid measurements published by SBD Marketing: the same grid of search points scanned before and after the work, in each named city. They measure visibility, not cases signed.
How the work is measured
The honest measure is cases signed, and the honest leading measure is visibility across the geography a firm can actually serve. That is what a search grid captures and what a single ranking screenshot does not, because local results vary by where the searcher stands.
A grid scan before the work and an identical rescan afterwards is what makes a comparison like-for-like. Every case study published across this network reports a window under ninety days, with the cities and keywords named. Those figures are first-party and measure visibility, not cases, which is stated wherever they appear.
Who is doing the searching
A large share of defense enquiries do not come from the person charged. They come from a mother, a spouse or an adult child, frequently while the defendant is in custody and able to search for nothing at all.
That changes what a page has to do. The reader is not evaluating a legal strategy; they are trying to establish in under a minute that the firm is real and that somebody will answer the phone. A page opening with a firm history loses them, and a contact form promising a reply in two business days answers a question nobody asked. The searches cluster in the evening and overnight, because that is when arrests are processed.
The second searcher is the defendant a few days later, out on bail with the paperwork in hand. This reader compares, reads the charge page and the reviews, and arrives with vocabulary from the documents they are holding. A site that never uses the statutory name of the offence has nothing for them. See charge-specific query.
Why it divides into separate markets
A firm defending DUI, drug possession, domestic violence and assault charges is competing in four distinct query markets and not one. Each has its own competitors, and being strong in one says nothing about the others.
Severity divides them further. Felony searchers are more often family members and further from a decision; misdemeanour searchers frequently want to know whether they need a lawyer at all, and a page answering that honestly earns the call more often than one insisting every matter is dire.
Jurisdiction divides them again. State and federal defense are close to unrelated as search markets, and the offence names vary across state lines: DUI in California, OVI in Ohio, DWI in Texas and New York. A national template saying DUI everywhere is invisible in half its markets.
What the work consists of
Four components, in the order they usually need doing.
Local visibility. Most defense queries carry local intent, so the ranking system in play is the local one. See local SEO and Google Business Profile.
Charge-level content. One practice area page per offence, written to the jurisdiction’s statutory language. A single “Criminal Defense” page cannot be the most specific answer to any charge query.
Technical and structural. Speed, mobile rendering, crawlability and internal linking. A firm whose charge pages are four clicks deep and linked from nowhere is asking a search engine to guess at its priorities.
AI answer visibility. An increasing share of defense research begins with an assistant. See AI search visibility.
