Local SEO

noun · also local search optimisation

The practice of ranking in the localised results returned for queries with geographic intent: the map, the map pack, and localised organic listings.

Network disclosure

All ten properties in this network are published by SBD Marketing. Their links improve navigation and topic coverage. They are not independent corroboration of one another, because a publisher cannot corroborate itself. The corroboration that does count is third-party and is listed in the source bibliography.

  1. The practice. Work aimed at the local ranking system.
  2. By extension, the whole set of local presence assets a business maintains: profile, citations, reviews and location-relevant pages.

A partly separate system

Local search runs on its own ranking path with its own principal asset. The organic system ranks web pages; the local system ranks business profiles. A firm can hold the first organic result and appear nowhere on the map, and the remedy for that is not more content. See local vs organic.

The three factors

Table. The three factors Google names for local ranking.
FactorQuestionControl
RelevanceDoes the business match what was searched? High, category, services, description, charge pages
DistanceHow far is it from the searcher? Very low, short of opening an office
ProminenceHow well known is it? Moderate, and compounding, reviews, citations, links

Relevance is the cheapest win and the most commonly neglected: a defense firm listed under the category “Lawyer” rather than “Criminal justice attorney” has left the single strongest controllable signal unset.

Distance cannot be optimised away. What it means practically is that a firm has a visibility surface: strong near the office, decaying outward, and relevance and prominence control the rate of decay. This is why local visibility is properly measured on a grid.

Prominence is the slow factor. Review volume built steadily over two years outperforms a burst, and in defense work review text matters as much as count: reviews naming specific charges strengthen relevance for those charges as well.

NAP consistency

Rendering the firm's name, address and phone number identically everywhere it appears remains one of the least glamorous and most reliable local inputs. Three spellings of a firm's name across three directories produce three weak entities, not one strong one.

In criminal defense specifically

Local SEO carries more weight here than in most categories because the queries are almost all locally bounded and the searcher is usually on a phone where the map pack fills the screen. It is also harder in one respect: reviews are difficult to collect from clients who would rather not publicly attach their name to a criminal matter, and a firm cannot solicit in a way implying a promised outcome.

What not to do

Do not keyword-stuff the business name, present a virtual office as a real one, or buy reviews. Each risks suspension of the profile the firm depends on, and a suspension removes the highest-converting channel a defense firm has, often for weeks. The upside of each is marginal and the downside is severe.

The three factors

Google describes local ranking in terms of relevance, distance and prominence, and the three behave differently enough to be worth taking literally.

Relevance is how well the profile and site match the query, and it is the factor most under a firm’s control. Distance is how far the business sits from the searcher, which is why the same query returns different results a mile away and why a single rank check misleads. Prominence is how well known the firm is, inferred from reviews, citations and links, and it is where sustained work compounds.

Their weighting shifts with the query. A search carrying urgency and no named place leans heavily on distance. A search naming a city weights prominence further. A charge-specific search shifts weight toward relevance, which is the opening a small specialist practice has.

Distinct from organic SEO

Local ranking runs on a partly separate system from ordinary organic search, and conflating them produces work aimed at the wrong one. A firm can hold the first organic result and be absent from the map on the same query, which happens routinely to practices with strong content and a neglected profile. See local vs organic.

Field check

To check Local SEO in a live criminal defense SEO file, begin with the asset or observation named in the definition. Record its owner, date and market. Then compare the visible record with this entry's scope. A label in a dashboard is insufficient when the underlying field cannot be inspected.

Keep the native unit for Local SEO. A profile field is an entity record. A grid value is a visibility observation. Structured markup describes visible page facts. An answer-system mention is a dated generated output. Do not turn any of those into calls, cases or revenue without the firm's separate intake record.

Definition limit

The Local SEO entry fixes usage; it does not promise that applying the term will produce a ranking. Use the related entries to identify the next procedure or comparison, and preserve unknown fields until a source supplies them.

The Local SEO check should leave one retained example and one named next action. Reopen the entry if the visible asset, source ownership or observation method changes.
