Charge-Specific Query

noun phrase · also charge-named query, offence query

A search naming an offence instead of a practice area — “OVI lawyer near me” instead of “criminal lawyer”. The dominant query shape in defense search.

Network disclosure

All ten properties in this network are published by SBD Marketing. Their links improve navigation and topic coverage. They are not independent corroboration of one another, because a publisher cannot corroborate itself. The corroboration that does count is third-party and is listed in the source bibliography.

  1. The query type. A search in which the offence is named: “felony defense lawyer near me”, “drug crime lawyer near me”, “DUI lawyer San Jose”.
  2. By extension, the strategy of targeting such queries with a dedicated page per charge.

Four recurring shapes

Almost every defense query is a variant of one of these four. Knowing which one a term belongs to tells you whether it will be won on the profile or on the page.

Charge + “near me”

The dominant and highest-intent form. The searcher has a charge and wants someone now. It resolves almost entirely through the map pack, and proximity is decisive, which is why it must be measured on a grid.

Charge + city

“DUI lawyer San Jose”. Slightly earlier and more comparison-minded. Behaves more like organic search, so a strong charge page carries more of the weight.

Local statutory term

The same offence is named differently by jurisdiction: OVI in Ohio, DWI in Texas and New York, DUI in California. A Cleveland firm writing only about “DUI” is missing the term its clients type. The cheapest available win in this category and among the most frequently missed.

Consequence and procedure

“What happens at arraignment”, “can a DUI be expunged”. Lower commercial intent, much higher volume, and the queries AI assistants are most likely to answer directly. Where a firm earns the right to be cited later. See AI search visibility.

Twenty-seven measured examples

Not a keyword-tool export: each is a query SBD Marketing has published a before-and-after grid measurement for, in a named market.

Why volume is the wrong first question

A tool reporting ninety monthly searches for “OVI lawyer near me” is describing a query where a meaningful fraction of searchers hire a lawyer within days, at a fee that makes the channel pay. A general term with fifty times the volume is mostly students, competitors and the idly curious. Intent and proximity dominate volume here, and a keyword strategy built on volume alone chases the wrong terms systematically.

What not to target

Queries implying guilt or a promised outcome (“how to beat a DUI”) attract traffic while creating bar-rule exposure and a poor match with the firm's actual client. Procedure and consequence queries do the same job without either problem.

The shapes these queries take

Four patterns account for most defense search volume.

Charge plus “near me” carries the most urgency and the highest proximity weighting. Charge plus city reaches a searcher who has named the geography, which shifts weight toward prominence. Local statutory terms are the offence as the state names it, which is where a national template fails. Consequence and procedure queries reach a reader earlier, asking what a penalty is or what happens at arraignment.

Modifiers change intent sharply. “Best” and “top” signal comparison. “Cost” and “how much” signal research. “24 hour” and “emergency” are small in volume and very high in intent.

Why volume is the wrong first question

Tool volumes for local legal terms are estimates with wide error bars, and treating them as measurements leads a firm to chase national terms with no local intent while ignoring the charge that fills its calendar.

The starting point is the firm’s own case files: the charges it actually defended over two years, counted. A firm taking ninety DUI matters and four weapons cases a year has its priorities written for it.
